How Approximate Location Works
Approximate location marks a shared position as reduced precision where the sharing mode or OS supplies it. It is a privacy reduction, not anonymity; authorized viewers still receive a location area.
How this works
The approximate flag travels with the location row, so viewers are told what they are looking at rather than being handed a vague point that appears exact.
It is a precision reduction and not anonymity. Authorized viewers still receive an area that says roughly where you are, and the identity attached to it does not change.
It also does not change who can see you. Scope is still decided by Crew membership and Journey capability; approximation only changes how exact the point is.
What happens next
Viewers in the authorized scope see an area rather than a precise point, labelled as approximate.
Common problems
- Approximate sharing is not anonymous sharing.
- It does not reduce the number of people who can see you; only Dark or ending a Journey does that.
